Once you make the decision to import a vehicle from the United States to Canada, there are some things you should consider.
Preparation: After deciding if you want to buy a new or used automobile, you should look into makes and models. Some vehicles are not admissible into Canada. Check with the RIV to make sure that the vehicle you want to purchase can be brought into the country. Even after this step, you will need to determine if modifications must be made to the vehicle in order to comply with Canadian laws. If modifications are necessary, you should obtain a rough estimate of the cost so that you don't find yourself unprepared for the expense. You should also check the manufacturers warranty on the vehicle you choose. In some cases the manufacturers warranty may be voided or limited for cars exported from the US. Please visit our warranty information page for more details. In most cases you will also need to obtain a recall clearance letter from the manufacturer. We can help you obtain this documentation directly from the manufacturer. Along with all the required documents (sales receipts, registration, title, compliance information and recall clearance letter), you also need to make sure you have insurance arranged prior to bringing the vehicle across the border. U.S. customs requires documents for vehicle export to be presented three days in advance of the actual export, so be sure to have everything ready in time. When You Cross the Border You must make sure that all required documents (Title or MSO, original bill of sale, recall letter, etc) are submitted to the Canada Border Agency 3 business days prior to the automobile arriving. Please be advised that some of the border agencies want the ORIGINAL title and will not accept a faxed or emailed copy. When you arrive at the border, you must complete the Vehicle Import Form - Form 1 (provided by the Canada Border Services Agency). A border agent will ensure your vehicle is on the list of models allowed to be imported. At this time, they will also check to make sure that the VIN matches all the documentation. After that, you will pay the $195 RIV fee as well as the GST (and the QST if you are importing to Quebec). It is best to pay these fees with credit card so as to avoid delays. Vehicles manufactured outside of Canada, the US or Mexico are assessed a 6.1% duty fee. If the vehicle is built in North America, the VIN # begins with a 1,4 or 5; if the vehicle is built in Canada the VIN # begins with a 2 and if built in Mexico, the VIN # begins with a 3. Any VIN #'s beginning with any other letter or number is manufactured outside of North America, Canada or Mexico and will be subject to the 6.1% duty fee. After You Get Home with Your New Car After payment has been processed you will obtain your federal inspection form as well as information regarding potential modifications. You have 45 days from the date of import to make any needed modifications so that your new vehicle complies with the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. The federal inspection can be done at Canadian Tire, where they can also do some modifications. The inspection must be passed within the allowed 45 days or your automobile will be subject to export back to the U.S. Once you have passed the inspection, you will deliver your Form 1 to your licensing authority. In short order, you will receive a label in the mail to affix to your vehicle that shows it has met the Canadian regulations. While the path to importing a vehicle from the United States can seem rather complicated, as long as you are adequately prepared, things should go very smoothly. Following all the regulations will have you in your new car in no time, and have you sitting there with some extra money in your pocket too.
At ExportUScars.com we will ensure that this process goes smoothly.
